Club History

KODTC has trained at the AJ Davis Reserve, Fullarton Road, Niddrie since it was formed in 1976. From small beginnings it has grown to having more than 400 members. In pursuit of both dog sports and activities, the Club is affiliated with the Victorian Canine Association Inc (Dogs Victoria), and the Australian Flyball Association Inc

The Club has a relatively small number of instructors and aspiring instructors. These dedicated instructors give up their time to teach members how to train their dogs to be more obedient as pets, to compete in various dog sports/activities and to promote positive canine/human interactions. Some of our instructors hold a Certificate IV in Dog Behaviour and Training (Delta Canine Good Citizen Instructors CGC) and all of our instructors have undertaken the KODTC Instructor Training Program (which is modeled on the Delta program).

Since 1997 there have been significant changes at KODTC in regards to training methods and classes/sessions structure with an increased emphasis on pet dog training, the introduction of Flyball Dog racing and closer ties to other dog sports and clubs such as the Agility Dog Club of Victoria and NADAC (North American Dog Agility Council). In 1999, KODTC switched completely over to training using reward based, positive reinforcement dog training methods (one of the first Clubs in Australia).

Some key results for members include:
- Better dog management skills
- Improved dog/human and dog/dog/ socialization
- Reduced anxiety and aggression in dogs
- Increased contact time with their dog which has benefits for both owner & dog
- Relaxed, enjoyable, fun classes where all dogs can have success
- Assistance with problem behaviours and/or referral to a suitable behavioural trainer or veterinary behaviourist

The Club is proud of its members and their dogs. Many of our members actively compete in Obedience, Tracking, Flyball and Agility, others provide a fantastic service in visiting local aged care facilities (through the Delta Pet Partners and Guide Dogs Vispat), or primary school children via the Schools Education Program.
